What Are Winter Tires?

At Lithia Nissan of Medford, we care about our drivers staying safe on the road. Medford winters require the use of winter tires, also referred to as snow tires. The different types of winter tires are studded, studless and performance.

Studded tires, as their name suggests, feature metal studs that improve your traction on ice and snow. The downside of these tires is they damage the pavement when no ice or snow is covering the road. They are also noisy. Studless tires use a special type of rubber that doesn't stiffen in cold temperatures to maintain traction. They also have deeper treads that assist in increasing traction. Performance tires were designed for driving on highways in Europe. They compromise some traction in order to perform well on clear roads with a high speed limit.

We recommend using studless tires to stay safe on the road throughout winter. Modern studless tires have excellent traction and are quieter than studded tires.
